Polish Catholic Bishops, Nationalism and Liberal Democracy

The alliance of the Polish Catholic Church with Law and Justice (PiS) government has been widely reported resulted in significant benefits for Church. However, beginning mid-2016, top church leadership, including Episcopal Conference, distanced itself from condemned its use National Catholicism as legitimation rhetoric government’s malpractices fields human rights democracy. How to account this behavior? article proposes two explanations. first is that PiS nationalist wing Church, while legitimating illiberal refugee policy attacks on democratic institutions government, further radicalized faction motivated a reaction liberal mainstream conservative prelates. leaders Episcopate, facing an empowered radical faction, pushed back doctrinal clarification orthodoxy. second explanatory path considers transnational influence Catholicism, particular Pope Francis’ intervention favor prompting bishops reestablish starts by tracing opposition Bishops Conference prelates autocratizing policies. Second, it describes dynamics Church’s internal polarization during government. Third, traces contextualizes Francis asylum political crisis (2015–2016). Fourth, portrays their respective impact: Pope’s triggered bishops’ response, deepening rifts between factions are ground cause reaction.
